“What?” Murray shouted. “You can’t weasel your way in here!”

Murray was no fan of weasels. They all lived on the west side, and everybody on that side of the park complained about weasels always talking them out of their stuff. Murray and Stumpy—stuff lovers for sure—never trusted anything a weasel said.

“I hear there’s some kind of wildcat here,” the weasel said in a low voice.

“Bob,” said Murray.

“Don’t know a Bob,” said the weasel. “Name’s Felix.”

“Bobcat!” shouted Murray. Weasels were obviously stupid, too.

“Bobcat?” said the weasel. “Let me see him.”

Kona stepped in front of the weasel. But the crafty creature just ducked under him.

“Oh, there he is,” said Felix.

Sparrow was taking Kitten for one of their little walks. She used a pair of string mittens. Sparrow carried one mitten and Kitten carried the other, and the string in between kept them together.

Felix walked over to them.

“Wow, look at the size of that cat,” the weasel said to no one in particular.

Sparrow frowned and pulled the mitten string to bring Kitten closer. Kona also drew nearer. And Conroy’s fur was standing straight up while his tail twitched madly. No one trusted Felix.

“Relax, everybody,” said the weasel. “Just looking, is all.”

But no one believes a weasel who says he is just looking. Weasels are conniving. Always ready to take advantage. What’s in it for me? is the weasel motto.

The air was tense. The group was silent. Kitten tried to pay attention, but he was getting sleepy. Just as he opened his mouth to yawn…
