“How’d it go today without me?” Matt’s uncle settled onto the sofa in the apartment above their garage and propped his feet on the crate that served as an extra chair or a coffee table as needed.

“I think I’m going to hire a receptionist. Someone who can manage the paperwork and cash people out, answer the phone, all that kind of stuff. There’s no way I can keep up with all that when I’m going to be the primary person working on the cars.” Matt brought his uncle a glass of iced tea and sat next to him. “Why didn’t you ever have someone?”

“Your aunt Ida did it for a while. Then we realized she’d do better getting a job with more earning potential so we could save for retirement. I guess maybe it was before you started helping out. It’s definitely easier with someone there. If you can find the right person. You know the margins we run at. Finding another full-time salary in there isn’t easy.”

Matt sighed. That was true. But the fact remained, he couldn’t do everything himself. He’d burn out before his aunt and uncle even left for their first vacation. There had to be a solution. He’d add it to the enormous list of things he was praying about. “Are we working on the car tonight or what?”

Uncle Jim chuckled. “Let me see your hands.”

Matt frowned and held them out. “Why?”

“Your skin was so cracked the other day, I didn’t want to push you to use your spare time if you’d be better off giving them a rest. They still don’t look great.”

“Yeah. Nothing seems to work.” He stood and crossed to the kitchen counter, grabbing the glass jar Deidre had dropped off that afternoon. He brought it over to the couch. “Just got something new to try. Maybe it’ll help.”

“Looks homemade. Azure make it for you?” His uncle gave him a sly look. “Haven’t seen her around lately. Been busy up at the hill?”

Matt winced. Of course his uncle noticed. Or, more likely, Aunt Ida did and sent him over to find out what was going on. “She’s gone. But yes, this is from her. Deidre dropped it off for me.”

“Gone? What do you mean, gone?” Uncle Jim reached for the jar and frowned at the note. “You read this yet?”

He shook his head.

His uncle tugged it off and handed it over before unscrewing the jar. He held it up to his nose and sniffed. Pursing his lips, he dipped a finger into the thick cream. He gave it another sniff before rubbing it into the back of his hand. “Smells kind of like a juniper tree, but I imagine there’s more in it than that. Feels nice going on.”

Matt clutched the note in his hand. He’d assumed it was simply a label. Now, he could see there was more writing and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to read it. What could she possibly have to say? Then again, maybe it was a list of ingredients.
