Alert at dawn. We are off to Coigneux to take up positions in case of attack.

At 6.30 p.m. we return. Our route is scattered with huge English camps, teeming with vehicles, men, and horses. But these men are more interested in polishing and shining their equipment than in thinking about the trenches.

28 April

I receive a personal note from the Colonel. I have been made captain adjutant-major in the 5th Battalion—adjutant to Major Constantin.

I leave my 6th Battalion with regret, and especially my 21st Company where the men were always ready to sacrifice themselves for me. With them, I felt sure that they would not give in and, whatever happened, would not leave me behind.

Well, one must follow one’s destiny. The 5th Battalion does not possess a famous reputation and I know hardly anyone in it.
