Chapter Nine
After doing her best to comfort Barbieâs mother, Kristin wanted nothing more than to head back to the hangar.
This was part of the problem with follow-up visits. Sometimes you discovered patients didnât make it.
A twenty-year-old had died for no good reason. Oh, she knew that the mean girls whoâd once called Barbie fat werenât responsible for her death, but they absolutely had sent a young girl down a dangerous path.
Pushing blindly past Holt, she left the ICU. Blinking away her tears, she decided they should take the stairs down to the lobby level. Without saying anything to Holt, she entered the stairwell and went down.
He kept pace behind her. She sensed he wanted to talk, but she didnât.
All she wanted to do was head home. Unfortunately, sheâd agreed to ride to work with Holt, which meant sheâd have to endure his company for a while longer.
When they returned to the hangar, she filed the follow-up reports sheâd performed in Jaredâs mailbox. The fact that Barbie Martin had died wouldnât impact their statistics, but the young girlâs passing haunted her just the same. When she returned to the debriefing room, resident Matt Abbott had arrived. He glanced at her and Holt. âHey, how was your night?â
âStarted off with a shaky transfer, but after that, nothing,â Holt answered when Kristin didnât. âThe wind kicked up overnight, so we were grounded for a while.â
âBummer.â Matt looked dejected. âTwelve-hour shifts are long when you donât get many calls.â
Tell me about it, she thought. But she didnât say anything, just took a seat next to Matt and waited for Kate to arrive.
Nate was the day shift pilot. He and Megan crowded around the satellite image, discussing the weather conditions. When Kate showed up, Kristin filled them both in on the details of their tenuous transfer.
âHe coded in the hallway?â Kate echoed. âThatâs terrible.â
âMoral of that story is that I should have increased the amiodarone infusion,â Holt said, addressing Matt. âKid is hanging in there, though. We did a quick follow-up visit this morning.â
âInteresting case,â Matt agreed.
Kristin yawned and glanced at her watch. âIâm exhausted.â
âMe, too.â Holt picked up on cue. âHope you guys have a good shift.â
She followed Holt out of the debriefing room, feeling self-conscious that theyâd be walking to the same car together, and driving home together. She needed to switch a few shifts with Kate, who seemed paired up with Matt. Kate was happily married to a former emergency medicine resident, Ethan Weber. Despite her experience with Greg, there were a few Lifeline staff members whoâd ended up married or engaged to physicians.
But she had no intention of following in their footsteps.
Always the gentleman, Holt opened her car door for her. She slid into the passenger seat, shivering in the cool temperatures. When Holt took his seat behind the wheel, he turned on the engine and gestured to the controls. âHeated seats, if youâre interested.â
âReally?â It was a luxury she didnât have in her car. Leaning forward, she pushed the button for her side and within seconds felt the warmth of the seat seep into her bones.
