Drake couldn’t believe he’d almost blurted the truth about how he and Serena had decided to wait to find out the baby’s gender. Because they’d wanted it to be a surprise.

He hadn’t known he had a son until the infant had been stillborn. Drake’s heart still ached from the loss.

But there was no denying his interest in the pretty blonde pilot.

They had a date. Tonight. To share dinner. What was he thinking?

That he was tired of being alone.

The stark truth was as simple and complicated as that. He was tired of being alone, but getting involved with another woman? One that was pregnant? There were plenty of other women he worked with. Not necessarily at Lifeline, but at the hospital.

Too bad he wasn’t interested in any of them. Even now, thinking back, he remembered a couple of women who’d asked him out. He’d turned them down, nowhere near ready to hit the social scene, but at the moment he couldn’t even remember who they were much less what they’d looked like.

The only explanation was that he’d lost his mind.

He focused on the transfer, a young man who’d been in a bad snowmobile accident up in Rhinelander and needed to be transported down to Trinity Medical Center. Not an OB call, thankfully.

He shouldn’t have been surprised, Megan was astute enough to pick up on his aversion to OB calls and to celebrating Christmas. He wished now that he hadn’t promised to talk about his past. He’d rather look forward to spending time with Megan without slogging through his personal baggage.

After he and Ivan boarded the chopper, he listened as Megan spoke with the paramedic base about their call. He hadn’t realized the flight between Milwaukee and Rhinelander would take a little over an hour one way.

A glance at his watch confirmed they should be back a few minutes before the end of their shift. If they didn’t run into any problems.

Not his usual MO while responding to calls, however. Hopefully, this one would prove uneventful.

They were in the air almost twenty minutes when the call came in from the paramedic base.

“Lifeline, your call to Rhinelander has been canceled. Repeat, your call has been canceled.”

“Ten-four,” Megan responded. “Turning around to return to Lifeline.”

The chopper made a wide one-eighty-degree turn in the air, before resuming its course. Drake cued his mic. “Base, this is Dr. Thorton. Can you tell me why the transfer has been canceled?”

“We were informed the patient passed away.”

He didn’t move for a long moment. Ivan sighed heavily and shook his head. “That’s not good.”

“No, it’s not. Thanks for the update.” He clicked off from the call.

It was a long silent trip back to the hangar. He wondered how Jared would feel about the waste of fuel in responding to a call that was ultimately canceled.

The last hour of their shift was uneventful. No additional calls came in. The night shift arrived bringing Holt Baxter and Kristin Page as the physician and nurse on duty, and Reese was the pilot.

The hand-off didn’t take long.
