Fold canvas in half widthways, matching holes as carefully as possible, and press under a damp cloth with a hot iron; this will make canvas stick together and give a tough, rigid strip, 27 × 11 ins.

Stitch folded edge of canvas to wooden base, using double linen thread and stitching through holes in base; sandwich one raw edge of canvas between the other to form a tube but do not join side seam until you have stitched the wire ring between the two selvedges round top edge; now stitch up side seam with linen thread.

Paint canvas and base with black enamel as follows:—Cover outside first and allow to dry, stuffing inside with paper to keep a good shape; when dry, enamel inside. When quite dry, bind top edge with coloured braid and decorate with lines of running-stitch in brightly coloured wools.
