Summer was hot, a bad sign that promised a bitter Winter. Zoya had no more kids to slaughter, and no one in the village would help her if she started to starve. She stared at the blooming moss-bells in front of her doorstep, and asked herself whether the wolves and bears would leave behind enough of her for Venko to find.

She waited until the end of Summer.

Then, she packed up her things, butchered the billy-goat and nanny-goat, cut up their flesh and put the thin strips out to dry. She filled her rusty old kettle with parched potatoes and tied it to her back. The day the first frost crept over the forest floor, she pulled her blood-red hood up over her head and left.
