13 Place the fabrics on the cutting board and remove the pins. Using a rotary ruler and cutter, cut along all the drawn vertical lines. Without moving the fabric, cut along the drawn horizontal lines. Take each square and first cut along the unstitched drawn diagonal lines (Fig 16). Then cut the drawn lines between the stitched lines (Fig 17).

14 Now open out each shape, easing apart any stitched corners. Press the seams towards the darker fabric.

15 The pieced triangles will be in two different arrangements (Fig 18). Separate them into two piles, one for each arrangement. Using one pile only, match the triangular shapes into pairs to make squares. Place them right sides facing and pin the centre matching seams carefully. Pin diagonally so that the seam allowances stay flat while stitching (Fig 19). It is better not to pin the sharp corners together, as these can stretch and get munched up by the machine. The seam you are going to stitch is a stretchy bias diagonal, so handle the fabrics as little as possible. Spray-starching your fabrics will make them firmer and easier to handle. Don’t starch now, as the fabrics will distort and even shrink as you iron them dry. Just remember to try it next time round. Match and pin the second set of triangular shapes to make squares in the same way.
