Now, imagine the sequence of notes you have been playing is a cycle with no beginning or end. We can start playing at any point in that cycle and by doing this, we can not only focus on our picking, but also on any timing weaknesses in the fretting hand. This will become clear when you play through exercise 7b:

First of all, notice that the first down-pick is in brackets. You only play it as a down-pick on the first time through the cycle. On any repeat, it will be preceded by a note on the 1st string (beat 4&) so you must change strings with an up-pick.
