As these two sentences are written, they each represent separate ideas. Edison is considered a great inventor, and he invented the light bulb and the phonograph, among other things. Written like this, the ideas are equal to each other in importance. By using the word because, however, we can create a single sentence and establish a distinct relationship between these two ideas:

8. Thomas Edison is recognized as a great inventor because he invented the light bulb and the phonograph, among many other inventions.
