Rational Numbers

Numbers that can be written as fractions (an integer over an integer) are called rational numbers. For example, , , and are all rational numbers. Integers are also rational numbers because they can be written as themselves over 1; for example, 12 can be rewritten as , so it’s a rational number.

Irrational Numbers

Numbers that cannot be rewritten as fractions are called irrational numbers. Some good examples of irrational numbers are , , and π. Roots that can’t be reduced are irrational.

Many people say that π is or 3.14. However, although or 3.14 is close, it is only an approximation, and it is slightly larger than the actual value of π.

Label the following numbers as either rational or irrational.
