Pencils

D o you remember when you first learned to write ABC? What did you use? The most common answer for most of us would be a pencil. The word ‘pencil’ is derived from the Latin word ‘penicillus’ meaning ‘little tail’.

The early form of pencil used by the Romans was called ‘stylus’. The older form of pencils used a lead core. The modern form of pencil was invented by a Frenchman, Nicolas-Jacques Conté (1755–1805) in 1795. The core of the pencil is composed of pure carbon called graphite.
