Love the Weeds

Don’t be too hasty to create an immaculate garden – bees are particularly fond of common weeds such as dandelions, clover, buttercups, celandines, bramble, bird’s-foot trefoil, cow parsley, white dead nettle, milkweed and poppies.

Garden for Bumblebees

Bumblebees have suffered huge declines over recent years. In the US, the formerly common rusty patched bumblebee is endangered, and you’re 50 per cent less likely to see bumblebees in North America than you were in the 1970s. And yet, ironically, the bumblebee is one of the nation’s most loved insects, often viewed as the fatter, fluffier, gentler cousin of the honey bee.

Our gardens have become a valuable refuge for bumblebees, with city plots often providing more attractive habitats for bees than intensively farmed areas. Recent research in Germany, for example, found that bumblebees are more successful at pollinating urban areas than agricultural land, with city parks, green spaces and urban gardens having a higher flower diversity and more potential nesting areas.
