Trim #4 seamline, align #4 triangle, sew, clip threads, and press open.

10. Complete the block by adding the last 3 pieces.

11. To trim the block, place the ½″ line on the rotary ruler on 2 adjoining sides of the square. Trim on the dashed trimming line of the foundation. The fabric will extend ½″ outside the solid sewing line. Turn the block and trim the remaining 2 sides in the same way.

Trim ½″ from sewing line.

Note

In making blocks for cards, I have you trim them larger (½″ around the outside), so the block edges will adhere to the tape around the cutout opening in the cards. Remember when admiring your completed block that the design shown in the window of the card will be ½″ in from the edge, so it is okay if some of the fabric extends only ¼″ beyond the sewing line.

When trimming blocks to make quilts, you would trim to ¼″ from the outside sewing line. The blocks you make here can later be trimmed down to ¼″ beyond the outside sewing line if you want to use them in a quilting project. Waiting to trim the blocks until right before sewing them into the quilt will ensure that their edges will not fray when they are handled.
