Chapter Fourteen
Skar stood in the alleyway, staring down at the two dead Hugors. They'd made the mistake of challenging him on his way to the Claw, mistaking him for just another mug. He'd taught them different.
He smoothed the wrinkles in his pinstriped suit, then shoved a lock of hair back into place. Might as well look his best for his "date," he thought with a smile ...
Had it really only been 24 hours since he'd opened his eyes and found things had changed? And why had he ever had any doubts about this deal? He was stronger and faster and better than anyone else on the street now; could see and hear things they couldn't; and if the price of it all was spilling a little blood, so what? That was what he did for a living, anyway.
He'd heard about this Cat — she was supposed to be a hell of a dish, and a fighter, too. He'd thought about using his stare on her — the one Arle had promised him he'd have, even if it didn't work on Fantasia—but decided against it. He wanted her aware and struggling. He wanted her to know what was happening to her.
Maybe I won't even kill her, he thought. Maybe if I take just the right amount, I can keep her around for laughs.
Arle had told him everything he needed to know about the joint. He went past the bar and toward the door that led to the gambling room. Some joker tried to get in his way, wanting to see some I.D. Skar flashed his fangs and the guy got the idea.
He stalked past the tables without looking right or left. All his attention was focused on one door and the woman behind it. He could almost swear he heard her heart beating all the way through the walls.
She had an almost pure Ogre bodyguard planted in front of the door. Before he could say anything, Skar gave him the stare, just like he'd been taught. It worked — the Ogre decided to stand perfectly still and stop breathing, and wondered why he hadn't thought to do that before? Skar laughed and moved past him.
The door was locked, of course. But where there was a lock, there was a keyhole, and where there was a keyhole, he could get in, or so Arle had promised. It took a lot of concentration and it hurt like hell, but he could feel his body melting away until it was just one more cloud of smoke in a room full of them.
Cat was sitting at her desk, going over the books, and caught Skar's fade-in out of the comer of her eye. One hand went for the gun in her top drawer; the other for a ward built into the underside of the desk which would summon security.
Assuming there's anybody left to call... she added.
Cat's greeting to Skar was a bullet that passed close enough to singe the hair on the side of his head.
