That’s where I found Grandma and Pearl busy working up their friend, Ruth Jarvi.
“That man of yours needs correction,” Grandma said. “He only hears what he wants to, right?”
“That’s right,” Ruth said, licking her fingers and pressing doughnut crumbs from a plate then popping them into her mouth and sucking the crumbs off.
Kitty’s car was gone from my driveway so I knew she’d been set free too.
“Have a doughnut,” Pearl said to me. “Kitty drove right home and brought back a fresh batch. She must make them every single day. I told her next time to bring twice as many from the start.” Pearl sniffed the air. “What’s that terrible smell?”
“Stay focused, Pearl,” Grandma said, shifting her cagey eyes from Pearl back to Ruth, “He also forgets things that are important to you, doesn’t he?”
“I suppose, now that you mention it.”
“He does that on purpose,” Grandma let her know. “He’s sly as a fox and makes you look crazy to everybody around you when you get mad over what looks to everybody else like no big deal.”
“I look crazy?” Ruth was all ears.
Pearl and Grandma nodded.
I wanted to cram a whole doughnut in Grandma’s mouth. Instead I made myself a sandwich. “Anybody else want one?”
“No thanks,” Ruth said. “We filled up on bakery.”
“He’s always extra cheerful when I run into him at the store,” Pearl continued. “But you would be too, if you could leave all the responsibilities to somebody else. You’re becoming bitter and unhappy, thanks to him never pitching in for all those years.”
“You sure hit the nail on the head,” Ruth said, getting bitter and unhappy. “But nagging hasn’t worked, not one bit.”
“Here’s what you’re going to do to get the upper hand.” Grandma clacked her false teeth. “You’re going to get chronically happy.”
I dumped out the old dregs, rinsed the coffee pot, and started a fresh batch. Grandma seemed to notice me for the first time. “We heard about Skytta Jacobson’s murder,” she said.
“News travels fast.”
“It came over your police scanner.”
“Since when do you listen to my scanner?”
“Since we started writing our bestseller,” she said. “Fuel for the fire, that’s what we’re looking for. Who did it?”
I rinsed out my favorite coffee cup. “”Niilo was caught red-handed with the murder weapon,” I told them. “A board with some wicked long nails. Dickey Snell is holding him.”
“That Dick Snell sure is a dopey kid,” Grandma said. “Everybody knows Niilo can’t even hold a pen in his hand.”
“He had it sort of in his lap,” I said.
“I bet the woman’s husband did it,” Ruth said, sounding extra bitter toward men.
“He was super glued to his kitchen cabinet,” I replied. “Good thing we came along when we did, or he could have been stuck there for a long time. Bummer for Niilo though. Now he’s in trouble and can’t even talk to defend himself. His wife sure picked a bad spot to dump him out of the car.”
“What!” Grandma exclaimed. “Loretta threw him out? Now there’s a woman I can respect.
