167. Dip your toes in the water

On a warm day, what could be better than a refreshing dip to cool you down? Wild swimming is a great way to immerse yourself in nature. Lots of people are swapping the pool for the sea, a river or a reservoir, getting fit and close to wildlife all at the same time. The waters of the UK aren’t very warm, so only do what you feel comfortable with – whether that’s wading ankle deep or diving in head first. Wldlife will tolerate swimmers much more so than walkers, so you might find yourself in the company of fish, kingfishers or birds.

If you’ve never tried it before, think back to your childhood. Did you ever go swimming or paddling in the sea? This is a great place to start. Pick beaches with lots of other swimmers and a lifeguard on hand, and only push yourself as hard as you think you can manage. Stay close to shore and take it easy. Make sure you’ve got towels and dry clothes to help you warm up afterwards as well.

You can also try wild swimming in rivers or reservoirs. There are maps online that show wild swimming spots that are tried and tested, and there are groups you can join for maximum safety and to swap some top tips. Staying in a group and learning from the pros is the safest way to get the most of this wild sport. You do need to be wary while wild swimming and follow some health and safety warnings, as it can be very dangerous. For guidance, see here. If this all seems a bit much, find somewhere you can dangle your feet in the water and see what wildlife comes to you.
