3-SECOND DISSECTION

Flight, the means to self-propel through the skies, proved advantageous to those organisms that evolved this ability because it opened up new niches and opportunities.

3-MINUTE SYNTHESIS

Charles Darwin predicted that fossils linking the major groups of living animals would be found. In the 1860s a fossil feather was discovered in a quarry in Bavaria, southern Germany, followed by a body fossil covered in feathers. The specimen also had a long bony tail, a jaw with teeth and clawed fingers. It was described as a bird (it had feathers), but it clearly had reptilian, dinosaur features. Archaeopteryx was Darwin’s predicted link and is described as the first bird.
