Curriculum Compacting

Curriculum compacting allows teachers to streamline what is taught to students by first assessing their prior knowledge (by administering a short quiz, for example) and then eliminating or adapting work that has already been mastered. This technique is a form of content acceleration that enables some students to skip work that is not appropriately challenging and access content that is. Students who have not yet mastered the material proceed with planned activities. Students who have mastered some of the upcoming material might move through the content more quickly and then engage in an enrichment activity. Students who have mastered all of the upcoming material may immediately work on an independent project or consult with a mentor or cross-age tutor.

The goals of compacting are to create a challenging learning environment, guarantee proficiency in basic curriculum and buy time for enrichment and acceleration (Reis & Renzulli, 1992). According to Reis and Renzulli, the following eight steps of compacting are key:
