Dear God, my problems usually aren’t very important, compared to everything else in the world. But You still love me and want to hear from me, no matter what’s on my mind. Thank You for never seeing me as an interruption. Amen.

You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.
EXODUS 18:18 NIV
Years ago, commercials claimed that a woman who wore a certain brand of perfume could bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, and keep everyone in her family satisfied. Nothing was too much to handle for the modern woman. Wouldn’t it be nice if life were that simple?
We’re too smart to believe our perfume will help us get through our day any easier. But sometimes we can still fall into the trap of thinking we never need help. Worse yet, we can buy into the expectation that we’re supposed to do everything for everyone because we’re Mom. God gives us a big “no” to that line of thinking.
The Bible shares a prime example of a person who tried to do too much alone. When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt toward their new land, he soon became exhausted from the responsibility of overseeing thousands of people. One of his most time-consuming jobs was hearing and passing judgment on disputes. His father-in-law saw what was happening and suggested that Moses appoint other men to hear most of the disputes. Moses would only get involved with the complicated cases (see Exodus 18:13–26).
Although God called Moses to be the leader, he couldn’t do it alone. He needed other, trusted helpers to handle certain things. Moses was capable but wasn’t too proud to get help. The lesson for us is the same. God blessed us with being moms and expects us to do our best—but He doesn’t always expect us to do everything ourselves. We are not the woman from the old perfume commercial. We are real-life women depending on God to be the best moms possible. Asking others to help worked for Moses. It can work for us, too, if we’ll just ask.
