Tick
Michael shoved his shoulder against the door. It gave up a groan as he flung it open and leaped from the car.
âStop! Police!â
Of course, the dumbass kept running. And the perp sure could run. Michael wished he could avoid a foot pursuit because athletic ability had not been handed down to him in his DNA. Probably wasnât in his fatherâs, either.
The guy had been moving from vehicle to vehicle in the lot, peering in windows, rattling the trunks and trying all the doors. Michael waited until he made an absolute move, figuring it wasted some shift time and would score him an incontestable arrest. The dimwit picked out a sparkly, new-looking, red sports Mazda coupeâlike that wouldnât be hard to findâand, damn, if he wasnât lightning-quick getting into the vehicle.
He didnât look to be a professional though, more an opportunist taking advantage of a careless ownerâs absent-mindedness. It was surprising how many people neglected the simple action of pressing a lock button.
Michael should have moved more quickly. When he pulled his cruiser in front of the Mazda to block the thief, he hadnât anticipated him jumping over his hood. The Usain Bolt wannabe made it to the field behind the supermarket even before Michael had managed to leap from his car.
By the time heâd entered the jungle of dried grass and evergreen weeds, the guy was halfway across the expanse. The growth was above knee height and the ground uneven, and it was a struggle to get through the mess.
Oh, for a machete. And to be able to use it in more ways than were intended or legal if I catch this guy.
Then, as luck would have it, the asshole fell and disappeared below the green-yellow mass growing on the vacant lot. He must have tripped, or this was the worst attempt at hiding heâd ever witnessed.
âNow I got you,â Michael said under his breath, as he lifted his knees higher, almost skipping through the brush. The owners of the vacant block needed a cleanup order to be issued. This was dangerous and not particularly helpful for pursuits. God knew what lurked there, too.
Before Michael could reach the man, he was up again but now seemed to limp with his first few steps. Michael was gaining on him and considered the sweet bliss of delivering an elbow to the assholeâs head for making him run through this shit.
He began to smile and feel good about this making a great story to tell his dad when he felt his ankle twist beneath him as his foot landed on what must have been a large and uneven rock. At this running speed, he had no chance. He had only enough time to extend his hands to break his fall, so with zero grace, he hit the ground hard. A groan erupted from his mouth as the impact knocked the wind out of him.
He lay there panting before the thought of snakes and spiders crawling over him got him up in an instant. His hand sought his weapon as he scanned the field in case the asshole doubled back.
