MOM’S HELMET HAT

SIZE:

21″ circumference

MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn, 35 yds each mauve, red, off-white, green, and navy; 70 yds, blue

Size G (4 mm) crochet hook, or size required for gauge

Size H (5 mm) crochet hook

Size 16 tapestry needle

GAUGE:

4 sc = 1″

PATTERN STITCH:

Popcorn (PC): 4 dc in st indicated; remove hook from lp, insert hook in first dc made, draw dropped lp through, pull tight to form popcorn; ch 1; PC made.

Instructions:

With smaller size hook and blue, ch 84, join to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same ch as joining and in each rem ch; join in first sc: 84 sc.

Rnds 2 and 3: Ch 1, sc in same sc as joining and in each rem sc; join. At end of Rnd 3, drop blue on wrong side of work; do not cut.

Rnd 4: Join red in same sc as joining, ch 1, sc in same sc and in next 2 sc; PC in next sc (see Pattern Stitch); * sc in next 3 sc, PC in next sc; rep from * around; join: 21 PC. Cut red.

Rnd 5: With blue, working over red, insert hook in 2nd sc of next 3-sc group on 2nd rnd below, ch 1, drawing up each lp to working row, work 3 sc in same sc on 2nd rnd below: 3 long sc made; sc in ch-1 sp of next PC; * 3 long sc in 2nd sc of next 3-sc group on 2nd rnd below; sc in ch-1 sp of next PC; rep from * around; join.

Rnds 6 and 7: Ch 1, sc in same sc as joining and in each rem sc; join. At end of Rnd 7, cut blue.

Change to larger size hook.

Rnd 8: With larger size hook, join mauve in same sc as joining; sl st in each sc; join.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, working in sc on Rnd 7 behind Rnd 8, (see diagram on page 93) sc in first sc and in each rem sc; join. Cut mauve.

Rnd 10: Join green in bump on back of first sc, ch 1, sc in same sp and in bump on back of each rem sc; join. Drop green on wrong side of work.

Rnd 11: Join off-white in bump on back of first sc, ch 2 (counts as an hdc on this and following rnds), hdc in bump on back of each rem sc; join in 2nd ch of beg ch-2, Cut white.

Rnd 12: With green, sl st in same ch as joining and in each hdc; join.

Rnd 13: Ch 1, working in hdc on Rnd 11 behind Rnd 12, sc in beg ch-2 and in each hdc; join. Cut green.
