TIMING

This is one of the few drives that you can actually do in the winter, as you're unlikely to encounter weather related road closures during that time. Winter is also prime time in Big Bend National Park, as the summer months are dreadfully hot there. Additionally, some park facilities are only open from November to April. If you want to also catch the bat flights at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, plan for a fall getaway; but schedule your cavern visit before mid-October, as that's when the bat flights end.
