‘Her lungs are shit,’ Lola said breathily, looking anywhere but at Abby. Her eyes fell on a strawberry plant in the corner and she plucked one. She tossed it in the air and caught it. ‘COPD.’

Abby had heard of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease via her mother’s dining table talk. If it got bad, it was rough. Life-threatening, in fact. ‘How bad is it?’

‘Ups and downs.’

‘Is she on the list for surgery?’

Lola tossed the strawberry and caught it. ‘Yeah. But she’s not sure if she should have it. It’s a fucking dangerous procedure, even if she does get to the front of the queue. And god knows when that’ll happen. I’d be amazed if her number came up before, well, before her number comes up,’ Lola said glibly, eyes fixed on her strawberry game. Abby didn’t pay her tone any heed though. Lola had accidentally shown her the woman behind the curtain. Just a glimpse, but it was enough. And that meant that Abby’s own wall, the wall she had worked so hard to erect between her and Lola, was starting to crumble, brick by brick. It had been extremely difficult to keep her head all day, not to look at Lola. But now? She couldn’t have looked away if she’d tried.
