Gaming Versus Gamification

As teachers explore this rich teaching strategy, they quickly come to understand the difference between use of games and “gamification.” While teachers have long used games and simulations for drill and practice of curricular content, gamification typically refers to use of various game attributes such as competition, rewards, and accumulation of points to turn all or most of the curricular activities into some type of competitive game or simulation, including even the initial instruction activities for new subject-area content. Thus, gamification might involve using predeveloped games in the class or creating competitive practice activities. Gamification may even involve teachers or students actually authoring digital games or creating virtual-world learning experiences for teachers.
