FEBRUARY 9

I left for Tarnów. A fatigued soldier from the Baturin Regiment drove me. Along the way he said this: “During the Japanese campaign, the officers were reprimanded for taking cover while the soldiers went under fire. But now, here, seeing the officers makes you want to cry, believe me. They’re the first ones to crawl under fire. They live with the soldiers in the trenches for months at a time. But you see, they aren’t accustomed to it, it’s harder for them. They bear so much grief! Really. And during battles you have to restrain them with force, hide them behind yourself. They’ll get killed and the chain will be left without command.”

It seems Igor Platonovich left for two days. Prior to his departure, he told me that P. D. Dolgorukov,134 who arrived five days ago, had taken an interest in my offer to travel around Galicia to look for shoe leather, and would like to speak with me. I saw him and he asked me to meet the day after tomorrow in the morning.
