A GLOBAL ECONOMY

A third sign that reveals the future seemed almost impossible to fulfill for many centuries—the prophecy of the global economy in the last days. Yet today, the majority of transactions in many developed nations are digital, taking place with credit cards or online banking. Mobile banking has also become the norm in many developing nations, allowing anyone with a smartphone or tablet to conduct business in a cashless society.

This is a reality in the day and age in which we live. What happens in the stock market in China affects the stock market in Europe, which affects the stock market in America, and the cycle goes on and on around the globe.

In Revelation 13, we read the amazing prophecy about the mark of the beast. The Scripture says that the false prophet, the false religious leader who assists the Antichrist, will cause everybody “both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads” (verse 16).

What is the role of this global economy in the end times? Dr. Thomas Ice explains the relationship between global government and the coming global economy.

The Bible teaches that during the seven-year tribulation there will be a global government for at least the final three and a half years. Revelation 17–18 indicates that the Babylonian globalization will be built upon three major planks: economic trade, false religion, and centralized government. Obviously we do not yet live in the time of the coming seven-year tribulation. But we do live in a time where God is setting the stage for events that will take place after the rapture, during the tribulation. Globalization is one of those things that will characterize the tribulation. We are seeing it take place daily, all around us. Everywhere you look institutions, whether private or public, are moving toward globalism.1

The future holds not only a one-world alliance of governing powers but also a single, united financial system. Bible readers often speculate about one important aspect of this system—the mark of the beast.

The Meaning of the Mark

The Greek word translated mark is charagma. It refers to a tattoo but could include any kind of mark. Each of the seven instances of the word for mark or sign in the Greek New Testament appears in Revelation and refers to the mark of the beast (Revelation 13:16-17; 14:9,11; 16:2; 19:20; 20:4). Technology already allows a simple electronic chip to be inserted under the skin. Any variation could fit this prediction.

Then the text says that no person could buy or sell unless he or she had one of three things: the mark of the beast, the name of the beast, or the number of the beast (Revelation 13:17). The mark, or insignia, identifies the name and number of the beast. The chapter concludes, “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six” (verse 18).
