Under Suspicion

“What does he think he’s doing?” George cried as Eddie swerved the delivery car onto the busy street beside the drugstore and sped off.

Nancy watched the car weave crazily away. “I might be wrong, but I think he’s going to Rosemont Hospital,” she said.

“Where Vanessa Heschel is?” George asked.

Nancy nodded. “I started telling him about Vanessa, and he just about jumped out of his skin,” she said. “The next thing I knew, he was running through the pharmacy and out the door.”

“Do you think he knows something about Vanessa?” George asked.

“He knows something all right,” Nancy said. “But I’m not sure what. I talked to him about his fight with DeWitt, but he insisted he had nothing to do with his death. And then he took your car as soon as I mentioned Vanessa’s name.” She paused. “What do you know about Eddie?” she asked.

George shrugged. “He just graduated from high school,” she said. “From what I gather, he was pretty popular. He always has girls calling him or guys stopping by the store to say hi.”

“Is he in the pharmacy area much?” Nancy asked.

George thought for a moment. “I’m away on deliveries a lot, so it’s hard to say,” she answered. “He does go in there to help check in new stock or to take customers’ prescriptions.”

Nancy stared down the street where the delivery car had turned. Eddie’s odd behavior wasn’t proof that he was involved in the poisoning, she knew. She really didn’t want to think he could do anything so horrible, but suspicion was bound to fall on everyone at Twickham’s—including George. Nancy was determined to solve this case before things got nasty for her friend.

The two of them turned back into the drugstore, where they joined Grace and Bess in front of the pharmacy counter. “Well, what was that all about?” Grace asked.

“I’m not sure,” George said. “Eddie just took off in the delivery car.”

“I think he might be going to Rosemont Hospital,” Nancy added. “When I mentioned that Vanessa Heschel was there, he was very upset. Do you know if he knows her, Grace?”

Grace rolled her eyes. “With Eddie, who can keep track of all the girls?” she said wryly.

“Have you ever had any trouble with Eddie?” Nancy asked.

“Oh, my, no,” Grace said. “Sometimes he seems more interested in his social life than in work, but that’s nothing new.” She smiled a little. “I feel sorry for him. A lot of his friends are taking the summer off before they start college, but Eddie can’t afford to. He’s going to put himself through school, so he has to work. I think he’s bitter about it, though he doesn’t show it.”

Nancy nodded, wondering just how bitter Eddie might be about working at the drugstore. Could his anger turn into something more dangerous—like tampering with medication?

Grace moved away from the girls to go back to work, and George went over to her corner of the counter. “I guess I’ll straighten up. I can’t make any deliveries without a car,” she joked lamely.
