Chapter 9

Virtual Reality

The noise inside the helmet stopped, except for the ringing in Frank's ears. He felt the helmet being lifted off his head, and he opened his eyes to see his brother staring down at him anxiously.

"Are you all right?" Joe asked, placing the helmet on the floor.

Frank nodded and got to his feet. As he did, he saw several kids standing nearby gaping at him. A woman hurried up to the boy and girl who had asked about the game earlier. "Come on, kids, we're leaving," she snapped. "These games are just too dangerous."

The Hardys and Willis watched as the woman hustled the boy and girl out of the arcade. Then Willis turned to Frank and asked, "Did something go wrong with the game?"

"It turned out to be a little too real," Frank replied. He described what had happened.

"I'm really sorry about that," Willis said. "The game shouldn't have malfunctioned. I'd better check the program. I'll see you guys later, okay?" He turned to the computer and began typing some commands.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Joe said as he and Frank left the arcade.

"Probably," Frank said grimly. "You're wondering whether Willis might have programmed that game to malfunction himself, right?"

Joe nodded.

"Well, there's no way to tell for sure right now," Frank said. "But it's definitely something to think about."

Joe looked at his watch. "It's nearly five-thirty," he said. "We'd better head back to the hotel and take a look at Dad's computer and that map."

"Good idea," Frank said. Then he sighed and shook his head.

"What's wrong?" Joe asked.

"I was just thinking about Dad," Frank said. "I hope he's okay. He's probably wondering when we're going to get around to finding him."

"That makes two of us," Joe said grimly.
