Chapter 10

Caught in a Trap

"Do you think Leona Max had anything to do with Iola's disappearance?" Joe asked Frank as he heard the real estate woman's car roar away.

"Dad ran her through Records and Identification and didn't come up with anything," said Frank. "But we know she's connected to Vollrath, and that doesn't look too good."

"Let's keep an eye on her," Joe suggested, "but in the meantime, let's concentrate on Jadwin. We need to find out whether or not it's a coincidence that he's driving a car with part of the same bar code number that showed up on Iola's pictures."

"I'm already checking that out," Chet said as he looked through the yellow pages. "I'm marking off all the car rental agencies in the area."

Frank yawned. "Let's call it a day. We can check out those rental companies as soon as they open tomorrow."

"And we want to make sure we're rested up for Vollrath's big party," Joe added.

"You fellows are serious about crashing Vollrath's party?" asked Daphne.

"I don't think we have any choice," Joe replied. "My picture on the refrigerator means Iola was there, and she may still be."

Frank and Joe were up early the next morning. They dressed quickly, then headed for the motel office.

Frank was pleased to see that Daphne and Chet were already on the job when he came in.

"Things are already happening," Daphne told Frank. "Uncle Regis got a call late last night from one of his card club buddies who lives over on Hibiscus Drive. Someone broke all the windows in his sun-room and smashed his air conditioner. Officer Bucknor took the report, but he said it was probably just kids."

"A person couldn't ask for a more trusting police officer than Deputy Bucknor," Joe said sarcastically.

"I've also been talking to the car rental agencies that are at the airport," added Daphne.

"Have you come up with anything?" Frank wanted to know.

"I described the car, the color, and the inventory sticker the way you said," Daphne reported. "Most of the rental car agencies carry that make and model, but only two use those particular stickers. There's a record at the agency over in Sea-view of renting such a car to someone with a Gull Island address," she continued, "but they've got a company policy against giving out names."

"What about the other agency?" Frank asked.

"They rented one car that same color," Chet informed them after glancing at the legal pad Daphne had used to make notes.

"A car with a three-two-six inventory number was rented to a family from Nebraska," Daphne elaborated. "The family said they were going to visit the theme parks near Orlando."

"If we plug into Dad's computer," Frank suggested, "we can come up with a list of names of people dealing with the Sea-view agency."

Joe hooked up the modem and their laptop computer. Frank keyed in the phone and code numbers that would access their father's computer in his Bayport office.

"We've got several clues to Iola's disappearance," Frank said while he waited. "First, there's the blurry photograph we're assuming she took.
