Relationships

Diana had a two year relationships with Hasnat Khan, a respected heart surgeon. After her death, friends had said that Khan was the ‘love of her life’.

The relationship with Hasnat Khan was conducted almost entirely in private, and Diana even lied to member of the press about it.

After Diana’s death - and contrary to media reports at the time - Khan said it was actually the Princess who had ended the relationship, telling him it was over in a late-night meeting in Hyde Park.

In 2013, a film was made specifically detailing the time Diana spent with Hasnat Khan. It was widely panned by critics - not because of any supposed historical inaccuracy, but mainly because they didn’t think it was very good!

Recordings of intimate telephone exchanges between Diana and a close friend of hers, James Gilbey, were made public in 1992 (although the conversations dated to before then). The affair was made particularly famous due to the nickname Gilbey called Diana - ‘Squidgy’.

Rumours surfaced that Diana also had an affair with rugby player Will Carling. According to reports, the two met at a gym and a relationship blossomed from there - however, these reports have never been confirmed.

Some reports detailed that Diana was once smitten with art dealer Oliver Hoare, a suave and debonair character - and even that the affair lasted for four years!

Hoare has remained silent about the alleged affair, however some sources say that it ended bizarrely, with Hoare calling the relationship off after what police referred to as ‘nuisance calls’ - from Diana herself!

As early as 1985, there were rumours in Kensington Palace that Diana was getting a little too close to police sergeant and Royal bodyguard Barry Mannakee. Although nothing has ever been confirmed, Mannakee was removed from his post before tragically dying in a road accident.

According to Canadian singer Bryan Adams’ ex-girlfriend, he had a brief fling with Diana in 1996. This suggestion appears to be corroborated by the mention in ex-butler Paul Burrell’s book of an unnamed popstar getting together with the princess around the same time.
