4.10 Symmetric Clustering Matrix

Clustering entities in a set based on relations among them

WHAT IT DOES

This method allows us to take a set of entities gathered during research and see how they are grouped based on their relationships. Seeing these grouping patterns from unstructured lists of entities is useful because they reveal high-level order and help us develop frameworks to drive concept exploration.

For example, a project on “personal finance” might begin by looking at peoples’ activities around money. Through research we may have identified that people set different financial goals, for example, “investing in a retirement program” or “buying a house.” The question becomes what relationship do these goals have to one another and are there higher-level patterns that tell us something useful? To understand this we need to compare each goal to others and see clusters. This is where the Symmetric Clustering Matrix helps. Using the matrix, goals can be compared to assess their similarity. They can be clustered and sorted to clarify how they are similar. The clusters of goals will indicate a larger framework for “personal finance,” revealing insights, bringing clarity, and helping us find innovation opportunities.
