Charlotte Dod (1871–1960): In 1887, Lottie Dod (as she was known) won that year’s Wimbledon Ladies’ singles Championship, and to this day remains the youngest person ever to have done so. Lottie went on to repeat the achievement another four times throughout an amazing career. Incredibly, tennis was not the only sport in which she competed; she was also a participant in golf (winning the British Ladies Championship), archery (winning silver at the 1908 Olympics) and hockey (playing twice for the England women’s team). Incredibly, in the final of the 1888 Wimbledon championship, Lottie - christened ‘Little Wonder’ by the press - actually had a handicap (of 15) imposed on her despite the tournament supposedly being ‘open’! Of course, she still managed to win. In addition to her summer sports, Lottie also rode the toboggan at the world famous Cresta Run, passed the prestigious St Moritz Skating test and conquered two mountains over 4000m in height. Lottie is considered by the Guinness Book of Records to be - alongside Babe Didrikson Zaharias - one of the two most versatile female athletes of all time.

Annette Kellermann (1887–1975): Some people know Annette Kellermann as the first major actress ever to appear nude in a Hollywood film, however she achieved a great deal more than that in her life. She was almost solely responsible for a huge shift in fashion; traditionally women had always worn ‘pantaloon’-style bathing suits, but Kellermann popularised the one-piece costume. In the early 1900s this was a highly controversial step; in fact in 1907 she was actually arrested for indecency for simply wearing a one-piece costume from her own swimwear line! Kellermann was a champion swimmer, winning regional competitions at 100 yards and one mile distances. Her natural ability in the water led to her performing in a number of aquatic shows, including swimming with fish in a glass aquarium and sensational high-dive stunts. Perhaps her most lasting legacy however is that Annette popularised synchronised swimming as a sport after audiences experienced her performing the first ever water ballet at the New York Hippodrome - a glass tank was constructed specially for the event. The film in which Kellermann appeared nude was called A Daughter of the Gods and was released in 1916; it was also the first million-dollar film production. Sadly for fans and film historians, it is believed that no complete copies of the film exist today.

Babe Didrikson Zaharias (1911–1956): Winning ten major golf tournaments would be enough for some people - but not for Babe Zaharias. In addition to these LPGA majors, she also proved highly successful in basketball and a range of track & field events. At the 1932 Olympics, Babe took the 80 metre hurdles gold medal with a world record time of 11.7 seconds, threw a gold medal-winning world record 43.69 metres in the Javelin, and won a silver medal in the high jump - she jumped the same height as the gold medal winner, but was ruled to have jumped with an ‘improper technique’.
