A Belcher Sea Snake

Venomous Snakes

There are thought to be over seven hundred species of venomous snake.

These snakes bite their prey, injecting venom into them through a duct in their teeth. The venom subdues the prey, making it easier to eat.

Venomous snakes are very successful hunters. When they strike, they have almost a 100% success rate.

Around one third of the venomous snake species can kill a human with just one bite.

Cobras have an interesting defence mechanism; when threatened they rise up and flatten their necks, making them appear larger; this is designed to frighten away predators.

In North America, the species most commonly responsible for bites are rattlesnakes.

If you do get bitten, you should get to a hospital straight away; scientists have now developed anti-venoms which ‘cancel out’ the effect of the snake bite.

Some snakes have extremely long venomous fangs; these fold back into the snake’s mouth so it doesn’t bite itself!

The most effective type of venom used by snakes is neurotoxic, which means it works by destroying the nervous system - this quickly stops any prey from breathing.

Some of the most venomous snakes are in fact sea snakes - species that generally live underwater!
