Interesting Facts

There are four generally recognised suborders of lizard; these are the Iguania, Gekkota, Amphisbaenia and Autarchoglossa.

Interestingly, no-one is really sure in which of these four suborders the blind skinks (a type of lizard) should be classed.

One unnerving ability that lizards possess is that they can keep incredibly still for hours on end. This actually helps them avoid predators, as some tend to hunt their prey based on movement.

Most lizards have the ability to defend themselves from the moment they are born - although obviously to a lesser extent than their much larger parents!

Furthermore, a lizard will commonly return to the location in which they detached their tail in the hope that at least some of it is still there - so they can eat it! It is common for lizards to store nutrients in their tails which they can then eat if times are tough... and one should never let a nutritious meal go to waste.

Lizards shed their skin (or ‘molt’) as they grow, although it tends to come off in pieces. One exception to this however is the alligator lizard which sheds its entire skin in one piece - just like a snake!

Palaeontologists think that there have been lizards on the earth for more than two hundred million years!

Although lizards spend a great deal of their time basking in the sun, overheating can be a problem - and so it is common for species in certain climates to hide away during the very hottest period of the day.

A number of species of lizard have developed an unusual ability - they can actually detach their tail if it happens to be caught by a predator.

Even more amazingly, they can grow another tail in its place - although this replacement is made from cartilage rather than bone.
