In the mid-80’s, Amy Grant was poised on the brink of becoming the first contemporary Christian music artist I to truly cross over into the big leagues of pop stardom. Although a bona-fide mainstream hit song was still a few years and a couple of albums away, Straight Ahead set her firmly on that path. The album also showcased Amy’s new-found vocal aggressiveness: a gutsy, growly edge to her voice that had not been heard before, and left many of her faithful fans a little confused—this was not the sweet, girlish warbler they knew and loved. And when the Grammy Awards rolled around that year, there was even more to talk about as a barefoot Amy gleefully danced all over the stage with her band members during a televised performance of “Angels.”
