Bush boots

Different techniques are often used together in a painting.

Dry brush

Load the brush with diluted pigment, dabbing off excess dampness on a tissue.

Drag the brushstroke across the paper so the brush skips over the tooth, creating a broken brushstroke.

Small, strong, dry brushstrokes can be made with undiluted paint.

Rough paper enhances the dry brushmark.

Wet-on-dry

Lay transparent watercolour tints over dry paint to build up colour and tone.

Wet washes take time to dry so lessen the amount of water in the brush.

Make sure the wash beneath is absolutely dry before applying additional colours.

Spongeing

Use the patina of a natural sponge to pat paint onto the paper.

Prepare plenty of paint to a creamy texture in the palette.

Wax resist

Rub candle wax onto the paper or over dried washes, then paint over the wax to create texture.
