Chapter 11

Chet Disappears

Frank drove slowly past the employees' entrance and saw the truck disappear down a ramp. Guards were posted there, preventing outsiders from gaining access.

By now, the boys' minds were burning with curiosity. What kind of deal could Jason have made with a Fantasieworld employee?

"Let's check with the officials here and find out who that guy is," Frank said, pulling into a public parking area.

After getting out, the brothers boarded a monorail train that was used to transport visitors into the immense amusement park. On the way, they questioned the operator and were directed to the Fantasieworld personnel manager, Mr. Laker.

"What can I do for you boys?" he asked as the brothers entered his office. He was a jolly, heavyset man wearing a blue suit and a red bow tie.

Frank and Joe told him their suspicions and gave him a description of the man in the truck.

Mr. Laker frowned. "We screen our applicants very carefully before giving them a job," he said. "If this fellow is mixed up in anything illegal, I want to know about it. If he's not, I don't want any rumors being spread about him. It's bad for our image here, you understand."

"We understand," Frank said. "And if you'll help us, we can keep our investigation very quiet. No one has to know who we are or why we're here."

The heavyset man adjusted his bow tie and paused for a moment to think. "I'll have to speak to my superiors before I okay any kind of special clearance for you," he finally spoke. "At this point, I can only give you the man's name and job classification."

Mr. Laker riffled through a set of employee files in his desk drawer and drew out a folder. From a photo, the boys recognized the thinlipped little man they'd trailed from Jason's houseboat. His name was Buster Randolph, and he was a maintenance man for one of the shows, the Bear Dance. The Hardys also learned that Buster had been employed at Sealand before he had come to Fantasieworld.

"Check with me later," the personnel manager said, closing the folder and returning it to his desk drawer. "I'll see if I can get you special clearance to the employees' area. And take these." He smiled, handing them a booklet of show tickets. "This way you can have some fun while you wait."

Thanking Mr. Laker, the Hardys left his office and headed for the amusements. They wandered past the Outer Space Planet, the Deep Sea Submarine Ride, and a host of other attractions until they reached the Bear Dance.

"Let's go in," Joe said. "Maybe we'll find Buster."

"Oh, you just want to see the show," Frank teased his younger brother. "But I admit, I wouldn't mind seeing it either."

The Hardys handed two tickets to a man at the door and entered the theater. In a few moments, the lights dimmed and the Bear Dance began. It was so delightful that the boys forgot all about Buster for a while. Singing bears danced on stage, playing banjos and guitars.
