âGot time for a coffee?â Swift had asked Mackenzie a little earlier, as she was discreetly approaching Adam Chapel. Sheâd said yes quickly just to get him to go away. She was sure his height would draw attention to them both and ruin her clandestine operation âOverhearâ, and acquiescing seemed to be the easiest way to achieve this.
Half an hour later they sat down in a coffee shop at the bottom of Park Street.
âSo, spill,â he began. âWhatâs happening?â
âNot much. I have a relatively quiet life,â she teased, as she knew full well, he was asking about the case.
âHa-ha. With the case.â
âWell Matthews doesnât feel Ribble can be ruled out completely, even though it wasnât his DNA on the bag and thereâs no trace of it in the bedroom.â
âAbsence of evidence is not evidence of absence in the eyes of the law,â replied Swift.
âHer point, exactly. I agree with her. I donât think he can be ruled out completely.â
âIâm in agreement there.â
âBut I get the feeling George disagrees.â
âWow.â
âWhat? Itâs not that surprising.â
âYou call him George.â
âNot to his face. Of course I donât.
âHow on earth does anyone get a feeling off DS Cross?â Swift asked.
âIt comes with practice. He has various tells,â she said.
âLike what?â
âLike walking out of a room, with complete disinterest, whenever Ribbleâs name is mentioned.â
âYep, that would do it,â he said, smiling at the thought of it.
âYouâre just a little besotted with him, arenât you?â she said.
âI am not,â he answered defensively.
âYes you are. Be a man and admit it.â
âI am completely besotted with him and am mature enough to admit it. There is, without question, a level of hero-worship in my relationship with him,â he pronounced.
âI had no idea there was a relationship of any kind between the two of you,â she replied.
âI stand corrected. You are of course right. It was presumptuous of me in the extreme to think that.â
She laughed. He was very charming when he wanted to be.
âThatâs very sweet,â she said.
âAnd that is very patronising,â he replied. âBut Iâm willing to take it on the chin andâ¦â He trailed off. He seemed to have been a little on edge from the moment he sat opposite her. As if he wanted to ask her something and was trying to summon up the courage.
âAnd what?â she probed.
But whatever it was, he seemed to have lost confidence and didnât elaborate any further. She found herself feeling strangely disappointed.
