‘Got time for a coffee?’ Swift had asked Mackenzie a little earlier, as she was discreetly approaching Adam Chapel. She’d said yes quickly just to get him to go away. She was sure his height would draw attention to them both and ruin her clandestine operation ‘Overhear’, and acquiescing seemed to be the easiest way to achieve this.

Half an hour later they sat down in a coffee shop at the bottom of Park Street.

‘So, spill,’ he began. ‘What’s happening?’

‘Not much. I have a relatively quiet life,’ she teased, as she knew full well, he was asking about the case.

‘Ha-ha. With the case.’

‘Well Matthews doesn’t feel Ribble can be ruled out completely, even though it wasn’t his DNA on the bag and there’s no trace of it in the bedroom.’

‘Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence in the eyes of the law,’ replied Swift.

‘Her point, exactly. I agree with her. I don’t think he can be ruled out completely.’

‘I’m in agreement there.’

‘But I get the feeling George disagrees.’

‘Wow.’

‘What? It’s not that surprising.’

‘You call him George.’

‘Not to his face. Of course I don’t.

‘How on earth does anyone get a feeling off DS Cross?’ Swift asked.

‘It comes with practice. He has various tells,’ she said.

‘Like what?’

‘Like walking out of a room, with complete disinterest, whenever Ribble’s name is mentioned.’

‘Yep, that would do it,’ he said, smiling at the thought of it.

‘You’re just a little besotted with him, aren’t you?’ she said.

‘I am not,’ he answered defensively.

‘Yes you are. Be a man and admit it.’

‘I am completely besotted with him and am mature enough to admit it. There is, without question, a level of hero-worship in my relationship with him,’ he pronounced.

‘I had no idea there was a relationship of any kind between the two of you,’ she replied.

‘I stand corrected. You are of course right. It was presumptuous of me in the extreme to think that.’

She laughed. He was very charming when he wanted to be.

‘That’s very sweet,’ she said.

‘And that is very patronising,’ he replied. ‘But I’m willing to take it on the chin and…’ He trailed off. He seemed to have been a little on edge from the moment he sat opposite her. As if he wanted to ask her something and was trying to summon up the courage.

‘And what?’ she probed.

But whatever it was, he seemed to have lost confidence and didn’t elaborate any further. She found herself feeling strangely disappointed.
