It has been years since I graduated from college, got married, had my own family and career, but Jared’s e-mail reminds me once again of preparing to leave home. I knew that my parents loved me, that they cared about me, and that they thought about me every day. No matter what happened in my life, they would resolutely stand by me.

Years after my parents drove me to the university the first time, I learned that my mother cried most of the 250 miles back to our home. Her firstborn had left the nest. As a parent, and even now as a grandparent, I understand. I experienced the same apprehension and sense of loss after my own children left our home. I wanted my three children to know that as long as they need us our doors are open. In the same way, as long as my parents are alive, I know that I can go to their house and I’ll always be welcomed. And yet I carry them in my heart whether I am physically with them or not. I always will. Likewise, Jesus is preparing us a home where his followers will be welcomed always. In the interim, he is with us always.
