CHAPTER 5
THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IS UGLY
We’re more than halfway through the book and we haven’t talked about your skin-care products yet. There are a few reasons for that.
First of all, it’s easy to ignore lifestyle and diet and focus instead on searching for that perfect product, even though what we eat and how we live have way more of an impact on skin health than any cream ever could. Products make up a very small piece of the puzzle . . . yet most of us focus our efforts on the hunt for the miracle elixir. So we need to reverse the focus; it’s only after you’ve corrected your habits that you should be thinking about your products and skin-care routine. Otherwise, nothing you do is going to make a lasting difference.
Another reason I’ve waited to address the issue of products is because it’s usually a tough topic for people—nothing makes my clients freak out more than the prospect of changing their skin-care regimen. But why is it so hard for even the healthiest people to question their skin care? Many of my clients have spent a huge part of their adult lives educating themselves about how to eat the “right way.” They know to avoid processed foods; they try to buy local and organic; and they try to eat lots of vegetables. But when it comes to their skin care, they use the absolute worst products—and they use a lot of them. When I dare to bring up the fact that maybe they aren’t using the healthiest products they could be, they are usually not happy to receive this information. Not even a little.
Here’s the thing: I know that people don’t like to think about what’s in the stuff they’re putting all over their face and body. And I don’t like to scare or upset anyone, so even though I run a company that is 100 percent committed to natural, nontoxic skin care, I’m often shy about discussing how deeply awful the skin-care industry is, and how serious the situation really is. But after starting S.W. Basics four years ago, I have learned more about the industry than I ever thought I would. And I can confirm for you once and for all: the beauty industry is ugly.
MEET THE SUITS WHO MAKE YOUR BEAUTY PRODUCTS
So let’s start with the basics: how we got here, why the beauty industry cannot be trusted, and why you should be very, very careful about the products you buy.
First of all, the entire industry is almost completely unregulated. The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is technically the agency charged with overseeing cosmetics, fragrance, and personal care. It would and should be responsible for monitoring what goes into all skin-care products sold in the United States. But the FDA’s regulatory oversight in this area is pretty limited.17 Here is a list of what it does and does not control:
