Chapter 17

Of course, her uncle’s sort of demand, sort of request wasn’t the last Zelda heard of her new relationship with Victor. Despite being an adult, and at one point being married, Mike had some questions for her as he sat on the other side of the couch.

The basement was small, but it had been made up well enough that, with the help of a dehumidifier, it made for a nice family room.

If Zelda could ignore the occasional spider.

As it was, she sat in her corer of the couch, wrapping the knit throw around her shoulders that usually hung off the back of the seat, her knees up, as though she was trying to shield herself from her uncle’s questions about her sex life.

Questions which Link was apparently in no mood to hear when he came downstairs, pulled out his game console, and stuck his headphones in his hears.

“Now, I just want to make sure you’re being safe.”

It was right about then that Zelda wished she had a Nintendo console and noise cancelling headphones of her own. Since she didn’t, she put up with the questions as best as she could, which was to say, not very well at all.

She wasn’t exactly getting a birds and bees talk out of all of this, but it was one step away from that and still managed to be just as embarrassing as anything else.

“You know I love you, right?”

Zelda nodded, reaching for another potato chip from the bag and popping it into her mouth.

“You know I only want the best for you, right?”

“Mmhm.” She reached for another. She was going to stuff her face and finish off the bag and still Mike would be asking her these questions.

Mike looked away from her. They weren’t even watching the movie he’d put on.

Kind of hard to, considering the topic, and what was happening outside.

“Look, I’m sorry about what happened with Harry. If I’d known for one second he was like that…well, I never would have let you near him.”

Zelda almost choked on the potato chips she was eating. “W-what? God, no! Uncle Mike, no, that isn’t something I hold against you at all.”

“I allowed it to happen.” He leaned back in his seat, looking away from her and down at the soda can he thumbed in his hand. “I’m your guardian. I could have put a stop to that if I wanted to.”

“I never asked you to stop it. It’s okay. I was nervous about it, but I kind of wanted to marry him.”

“Kind of.”

Zelda pressed her lips together.

This was what Victor had been talking about. She let everyone take the blame for her, let everyone fight for her and protect her, and it had gotten to the point where, now as an adult, she couldn’t even put her uncle’s mind at ease about her shoddy marriage with Harry.

Zelda leaned over; she reached for his hand. Mike tensed when she took it, but then seemed to relax as she gave it a squeeze.

Zelda looked him right in the eye.
