liable

[LYE-uh-buhl]

legally responsible; likely to do or be something, usually in an undesirable sense

Liable is another word liable (we couldn’t resist) to be mispronounced merely because we’re lazy. It’s easy to let your tongue slip and say “libel” instead of properly pronouncing all three syllables—“li-a-ble.”

But if you mispronounce liable with two syllables—as libel—by getting rid of the a, you’re now talking about slander and defamation, not legal responsibility or likelihoods. Big differences from one small syllable.

And now for one important note—liable usually refers to an undesirable or legal possibility, so don’t use it for pleasant possibilities. Don’t say “Our team is liable to win today!” unless, of course, you’re betting on the other team. But you probably shouldn’t bet against your own team anyway.
