Chapter 3: Hand Sanitizer You Can Make at Home
Making hand sanitizer at home is not difficult or time-consuming. In only a couple of minutes, and using basic ingredients, you can create your own hand sanitizer that will keep you as safe as the products that you typically buy from the store. By learning these recipes, you will see that it is easier than you might think to stay protected. The following recipes will provide you with a variety of ways to make your own hand sanitizer: you can try them all to see which ones you enjoy most. Whether you make a gel or a spray, these recipes are sure to become a staple in your household.
Before you get started, keep in mind that the potency of any hand sanitizer you make is going to matter a great deal. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends that your hand sanitizer includes at least 60% rubbing alcohol in order to be effective at killing bacteria. Luckily, this staple item is one that many households already keep in stock at all times. The rubbing alcohol is the main ingredient that is going to protect you, and also come in handy during other emergency medical situations.
If possible, you should aim for an even higher potency when you make your sanitizer. Sticking to a minimum of 75% rubbing alcohol will ensure that you are adequately protected. Using 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol is what most recipes call for. Individuals who use vodka and whiskey in its place are not likely to end up making a sanitizer that is as effective due to the small percentage of alcohol present in these liquors. Sticking to pure alcohol is always going to benefit you more.
Don’t forget to properly sanitize any tools that you are going to use while making your hand sanitizer: it defeats the purpose if you are not hygienic when you make it. Clean your hands thoroughly before you handle any of the ingredients or supplies that you will be using. Having this kind of awareness will get you into better habits while also giving you the peace of mind of knowing that your hand sanitizer is going to be effective. Make sure that you also have proper storage containers or spray bottles, depending on what kind of sanitizer you are making.
