CHAPTER 15

Marisa lifted her eyelids then moaned. Her eyes hurt, her head ached, her skin was on fire, and no amount of mouthwash could erase the disgust on her tongue. What in the world made her choose tequila instead of wine?

Elinor Benveneste.

The image of the woman caressing Aidan’s cheek flared in Marisa’s mind. Fingers on a body that was hers, even if she insisted on abstinence, had ignited a firestorm of emotions. Aidan was right. She had been jealous. Wanted to show the international model what a professorial hood rat really looked like.

Marisa had no regrets over putting the woman on her ass. While the admission of her jealousy-fueled response to Elinor’s pawing of Aidan wasn’t a particularly comfortable one, she knew it was one she could live with.

She forced herself from bed and into the bathroom. She stripped and stepped into the shower. The first splash of cold made her squeal. Once the water cascading from the showerheads heated, her body began to ache less. Bits and pieces of what happened filtered into her mind. She really needed to stay away from tequila from now on.

Once she was dressed in a pair of cotton pants, a T-shirt, and sandals, she decided to put on a brave face, hoping Aidan’s understanding would kick in. When she reached the kitchen she saw Mira perched on stool at the island, her fingers reaching into a bowl of strawberries, taking one out and dipping it into a smaller bowl her father held out to her.

Marisa smiled when her daughter brought a dripping chocolate-covered berry to her mouth and bit into it. A mix of berry juice and chocolate dribbled down her chin. Mira used her tongue to clean it up.

“I hope that’s not breakfast,” Marisa teased, moving to the counter. “You need something healthier.”

“Daddy say chocolate berries is good for almost five-year-old girls,” Mira stated, popping another berry into her mouth. “Daddy say it will taste yummy with French toast.”

“Says.”

“Says,” Mira repeated. “Do you want some, Mommy?”

Marisa reached for the strawberry bowl. “I’ll just have berries without the chocolate. Umm, these are good.”

“Miss Rose grows them in her garden.”

“Who is Miss Rose?”

“Daddy’s keeper.”

Marisa shot Aidan a look. “Daddy’s keeper?”

He smiled as he walked over to the stove. “Rose takes care of the house and everyone who lives here. There’s still work to be done on Mira’s linguistic usage. It fascinates me how your daughter can be very articulate one minute and then rip the English language to shreds the next. French toast and bacon?”

“The four-year-old mind,” Marisa observed, sliding onto the stool next to Mira. “Please. Is there coffee?”

Aidan pointed toward the coffee machine at precisely the moment Rose Chambers walked into the kitchen.

“Aidan Marcellus Graywolf, what are you doing in my kitchen?”

“Cooking breakfast for my girls,” he quipped. “Want some?”

The woman tutted and marched over to Marisa. “I’ve already met Mira. I’m Rose Chambers. My husband Carl and I take care of this house, and that one,” she said, tilting her head toward Aidan.
