It was somewhere between charming

and wearisome, how it’s not fair to call the players late

on the night before game day, and say, “I love you

in the summertime, because all rhythms

come from the body,” though it’s true, or true enough,

that we are undone by the memories we don’t have

of the first day, what we might have said

that got everything started, and how we looked

in the uniforms, under the bone trees, feeling much better

than we did before. Feeling pretty good, in fact.

When I was young, I called it my childhood,

and it can’t be repeated because it was only a kind of tone

maybe,

and situationally bound to the very people who were there—

not that you can’t try, and maybe even to better results,

the way different singers take a go at the same song until it

starts to feel

less like a song and more like a tree where one can build a

fort

and drop water balloons on hapless pedestrians

who venture too near the tire swing.
