Chapter Twelve
In the Hotel George V in Paris where I have lived for some thirty years I have two good friends, Mr. Falcucci, the hotel manager, and Mr. Klein, the director of reception. From time to time we get together in the lounge for a drink and a chat. One evening when we were having one of our quiet discussions Mr. Falcucci quite out of the blue, suddenly said to me, âI understand you are writing another book on the stock market.â
I had been questioning various guests about their stockmarket problems and experiences so I assumed that the word must have got around.
âYes, âthatâs right,â I replied, âat the moment Iâm just gathering material for it.â
âI would be very interested to hear your views on my portfolio,â he said.
I sat up astonished. This was the first Iâd heard of Mr. Falcucci mixing stocks with hotel management. It hadnât occurred to me to ask him about his stockmarket experiences.
âI had no idea you owned stocks. Why didnât you mention it to me before?â I asked.
âI had often thought of asking your advice about my stocks but somehow it slipped my mind.â
âStocks should never slip your mind; you should keep your eye on them all the time.â
âWell, I have other things to think about. I just put my stocks in the bottom drawer and assumed that they would look after themselves and eventually provide me with a nest egg to retire on.â
âHow do you come to have these stocks? What made you buy them?â
âOh, rich Americans passing through often gave me stockmarket tips. Whatever they recommended I should buy, I bought,â he replied.
By now I was all ears. âI would be fascinated to see what you have acquired over the years. Could you let me see a list of your holdings?â
âCertainly,â he replied happily. âLetâs meet here tomorrow night and discuss it.â âItâs a date.â
While we were engaged in these exchanges Mr. Klein had been listening with rapt attention without saying anything. He suddenly interjected. âCan I bring my portfolio along as well?â he asked.
I was taken aback. âWhat, you too!â I exclaimed.
âYes, I have also built up a portfolio of stocks in the same way over many years. I would also be grateful for your advice.â
âWell, bring it along tomorrow night too,â I said.
It was past midnight when we shook hands and they departed, leaving me to my thoughts. What a coincidence, I thought to myself. The manager and director of reception of one of the most fashionable and cosmopolitan hotels in the world with portfolios of stocks recommended by some of the richest people in the United States! What would they be like-a dull list of safe conservative blue chips, a worthless collection of cats and dogs, or an Ali Babaâs cave of some of the greatest stocks in history? It could be sensational. I could hardly wait for the next evening to arrive.
When we met the following evening I was tense with excitement. Both M Falcucci and Mr. Klein
