CHAPTER 18

Ryan

You know you’re with truly good people when there’s not even talk of busting out booze, no sneaky looks like, “damn, we shouldn’t in front of Wells.” The Hush family did, however, bust out the marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers like they were going out of style. There were bags of chips passed around with canned salsa and bean dip, and various other savory snacks for those not into the camping staple.

“S’mores represent everything that’s good about the world.” Los spoke lovingly to his fourth treat. “You can’t not feel like a kid while eating them, but, like, those few moments as a kid when everything seems like it’s going to work out okay, the good guys are going to win, and everyone will get second helpings at dinner.”

Silas hugged Los and kissed his cheek, at which, Los wiped at his face. “Dude, you got me all sticky. Wait, don’t even—”

“You walked right into that one.”

It was down to myself, Kal, and the guys from Hush around the fire. The rest had gone back to the RV or, in Bowie’s case, his boyfriend’s van, and the chatter had slowed considerably. Everyone was beat. The beach had been a great idea, but tomorrow’s show was imminent. The carefree attitudes had waned.

“Man, camping is fun,” Jordan said. “We should do this again when the tour is over.” Jordan happily licked melted marshmallow from his fingers as he spoke.

“We’ve only got two weeks after Warped is over before we head to Europe.” Brains glanced in the direction of the van. “We’ll have to make some personnel decisions.”

If they were talking band stuff, I didn’t want to interfere. I stood from the camp chair I’d borrowed. “This seems like a nice segue—”

“Wait,” Brains raised his hand and looked at Kal. “The offer is there for you to consider, Kal. We’re going to need a tech for our next tour. If Warped doesn’t do you in, we’d like you to think about coming with us. To Europe.”

Kal’s wide-eyed gaze fell on Brains and then me. “Will you be there?” he asked quietly.

I shook my head. “I doubt it. I don’t have details, but y’all already have an opener, right?”

“Just Like Love is a definite. Not sure if that’s it. It would be cool to take like three bands with us, but we won’t know for another few weeks.”

Kal pondered the question while gazing up at me from his chair. What could I say? Our business was fluid, plans were often in motion and changed on the fly. It wouldn’t be fair of me to, what, lay claim to Kal? As much as I didn’t want there to be an expiration date on our adventure, what could I do?

Finally he stood, and handed his s’mores stick to Jordan.

“I’m honored you would consider me for this. May I give you my answer—”

“Yeah, dude. Sure. Take your time.”

Kal nodded and then turned hesitantly toward me. I’d told him earlier I wanted him. He’d said yes. What was I waiting for?

“Thank you,” Kal finally said.
