“Lenny, you need to think about this,” Mael said, but Lenny had already thought about it, and he knew what he had to do.

He stood in front of Mael, his arms crossed over his chest. “Either you shimmer me there, or I ask someone else.”

“I’ll do it, but please, slow down.”

“I can’t.” What if Alpha Carter already knew Yerad was Lenny’s mate? Not that the alpha had ever had any problems with Lenny—he’d actually been opposed to Lenny leaving, and he’d given up only begrudgingly.

But Lenny’s father was the pride’s beta, and if Alpha Carter knew something, then so did Lenny’s father. He was bound to do something about it. In the best-case scenario, he’d just have Yerad kicked out of the pride and sent back to Whitedell, but Lenny’s father was a man who angered easily, and he might be able to sway Alpha Carter into doing something they’d both regret.

“Lenny, I’ll shimmer you wherever you want to go as soon as you tell me what’s happening.”

Lenny huffed. “You know what’s happening. Yerad is a liaison agent for the council, and right now he’s working with my birth pride.”

“Yeah, I got that, but why is that a problem?”

“My father is the pride’s beta. He can cause problems.” Lenny grabbed Mael’s arm. “Now take me there, or I’ll find another Nix to do it.”

Since Mael didn’t look like he was going to help Lenny, Lenny stormed out of his room. He grabbed the first Nix he encountered—a woman he thought was named Rhiannon or something.

“Can you please shimmer me to the place I’m thinking about?”

She gave him a wide-eyed glance, but she nodded. Lenny closed his eyes and focused on his old pride house. Someone grabbed his arm, and he jerked back, opening his eyes. Mael looked ready to kill him as painfully as possible, but the world around them dissolved. Lenny slammed his eyes shut again and thought of his pride. He had no idea who Yerad was with or where he was, so it was better to shimmer into a neutral area. Not that there was any place really neutral, not inside the gates, but the front door would do.

Lenny knew he was there when cool air kissed his face. He opened his eyes to see a place he’d never thought he’d return to.

The front door was the same as it had been a year before when he’d left the pride to become an enforcer. Nothing seemed to have changed from outside, and Lenny wondered if it was just a façade. What would he find inside? Would he even be allowed to step into the house, or had Alpha Carter implemented security?

The only way to get inside the gate was to use the intercom and wait for Scott to open it. It was possible no one had yet noticed he and Mael were there, since they hadn’t needed to ring the intercom. Lenny wanted to use the time they still had before someone did to find Yerad and, if necessary, get him out of there.
