Chapter 21

The only thing that was on Simone’s mind was trying not to be like Paislee, but to be better than her. School had started and she had failed to buy any of her school-aged children new clothes or shoes. Her oldest son had come home in tears. Instead of her getting on her grown woman and purchasing him a nice pair of shoes, she laughed at him when he said that the kids at school said that his shoes were talking. Simone thought back to when she was in school. She was once told that her shoes were talking as well. The next week she asked Paislee to borrow a pair of shoes. That’s when she told her that her momma stole most of her things. Paislee’s momma greed to get her the latest styles in clothes if she went with the duo in order to watch out. They would go from mall to mall on the weekends. Paislee’s momma didn’t fuck with the low budget malls like Western Hills and the one in Roebuck. She would barely hit the Century Plaza. It was actually her last resort.

Every weekend they would head out to the Galleria dressed to impress and hit all of the stores. That was back when they left the shoes out. It wasn’t just one shoe in the box either. Both of them were inside with the correct sizes. Hell, Paislee’s momma had even went in Footlocker when they were crowded, ask to look at some shoes and walk out with them on her feet. Then to the next store. And the next one. She never discriminated either. Whatever Paislee wanted, she got. Whatever Simone wanted, she got. And she never got caught. She almost did. But, they couldn’t keep up with her, she was way too swift. And with Paislee and Simone looking out for her, there was just no way. They always acted as the distractions.

“Simone, you didn’t buy these kids no school clothes or shoes?” Simone knew that it was coming. Ever since her husband got a better paying job, he was always in his feelings about something. It probably also had something to do with the fact that the two of them weren’t fucking. The night before she told him that her period was still on. He told her that she needed to go to the doctor. It had been a few weeks since Tevin had promised that he was taking her on a trip. They hadn’t missed a beat with fucking every chance they got, and she was actually content being the other woman. Well, some days she was, but today wasn’t one of them.

“I told them that we would go this week. I had to wait until your check went into the bank account and cleared.”

“I told you months ago that you didn’t have to worry about that. The money is going to be there. Sure we still need to budget, but not as much. You check the account daily.”

“Yeah, but you didn’t tell me that I could go school shopping.
